Parent Involvement w/ Teen Drivers Program

Sharing this from Mick Mulhern, Program Administrator/Youth Coordinator from the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau.

The Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is committed to reducing the number of lives lost on Iowa roadways as well as minimizing the number of serious injury crashes. The number one cause of teen death in Iowa and the U.S. is car crashes. There are many causes for these deadly incidents as well as several preventable solutions to consider. Sadly, teen drivers, from those who are just beginning to drive to those who have driven for a few years are vulnerable to this troubling statistic.

One effective counter measure is aimed at bringing parents and guardians together with their teens to openly discuss traffic safety and good driving behavior.  The "Parent Involvement with Teen Drivers Program" brings to light the importance that parents and adult influencers have on teens and the examples they are setting. It encourages conversations about driving that might not otherwise have taken place. The program is informational in that it is intended to educate the adults on current trends and traffic laws. Ideally it will cause them to reflect on their own driving habits as well.

The attached brochure provides information for parents and adult influencers regarding current traffic crash trends, driver licensing laws and suggestions that they can use now to help reduce this problem. Please consider having this brochure visibly displayed and available for your visitors and staff.  There is no cost and the brochures will be delivered to your organization upon your approval. In addition to the brochures guest speakers representing traffic safety, a desk top driving simulator activity and traffic data may be available upon request.
Thank you for your consideration and concern for helping us reduce unnecessary teen deaths in Iowa. Our children are our most valuable asset!
